Nine M

Nine M is an atelier that specializes in designing the Ambiance of Space by linking the physical elements that define the space with the Light that encompasses it.

We design visible spaces with invisible light through the process of merging the following two perspectives :

'Light as form-maker' & 'Light as form-giver'

'Light as a form-maker' acts as a major factor in space design by defining the shape and materials of space and objects. Not only the direction in which the building is placed, but also the shape and location of the windows and the materials & shape of the wall are greatly influenced by light. It is natural to design how space will be read when light and shape meet, reflecting human natural needs. This process is to design a shape in response to light.

Using 'Light as a form-giver' is an approach to the concept of how to show existing forms. In a different light, the form and space can be read completely differently. In this case, light itself is designed to “mettre-en-scène” a shape.

Lighting design is a task to conceive what shape and space will be visually provided by comprehensively utilizing the role of light as a form-maker and light as a form-giver. So it's the process of studying light (natural and artificial) and designing three-dimensional shapes and surfaces together in a space where light touches. It is natural for lighting designers to present a review of the materials and shapes where light meets. Designing “visible” shapes and spaces using “invisible” light is the completion of lighting design.

Since the Ambiance of space is created when light meets an object, the works of Nine M, focusing on the practical value of light design, can be defined as Architectural Ambiance Design. Nine M will continue the research and challenges so that the experience of space can be expanded to a higher dimension by combining not only visible but also invisible space elements.
